What I liked

I like medical scribing because it offered me very in-depth exposure to the field of emergency medicine. It also has giving me an opportunity to meet a very wide variety of Providers from emergency medicine physicians to mid-level providers such as physicians assistance and nurse practitioners. Where I specifically work, I get a fast paced environment and basically a front row seat to emergency medicine.

What I wish was different

There is very few that I wish would have been different as I really love my job.The only thing that I wish would be different would be the pay. I feel as though the critical aspect of my job such as making sure that I document the correct information. This information can intern be useful to the patient, the hospital, and in some cases in legal court. Making $10 an hour definitely has its downs to the job.

Advice

I would say absolutely go for it. This job is absolutely incredible for students looking into pre-medicine, pre-nursing, and or pre-PA. Honestly, this would be a wonderful job for individuals discerning whether or not they want a career in the medical field.

What I liked

The environment while working in the hospital was one I had never experienced before. Everyone was so welcoming and helpful. I learned so much in the small time that I was there. It also allowed me to work alongside physicians assistants which also made me sure in what I wanted as a future profession.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time in the internship. Sadly it ended too quickly.

Advice

Be prepared for working in a fast paced environment. Anything could happen at anytime. Also take every bit of advice that you can from providers.

What I liked

It was a great experience to learn and be up close with doctors while doing meaningful work.

What I wish was different

More time as the commitment was pretty hard on a student schedule. Also higher pay since the work was pretty intensive.

Advice

Learn the material as best as you can and have a fast typing speed. At my site, even though they say it should be >80 WPM, its helpful if its over 100.

What I liked

I learned a lot while also getting a firsthand experience of the atmosphere within the Emergency Department.

What I wish was different

I would have liked more communication regarding my work hours. I was told that if I took more hours one month then I could take less shifts the following months. This did not happen, which made it difficult for me to continue my Scribe work as I had other responsibilities and spent extra time the month prior in hopes that I would have a more manageable schedule as alluded to by the Chief Scribe.

Advice

It is a great first job experience that teaches you great medical terminology while exposing you to the ER. This position helped improve my typing skills as well as my knowledge, which makes it a great learning opportunity while also thrusting newfound responsibility.

What I liked

The experience I gained and the knowledge I learned was so valuable working first hand with ER doctors and PAs.

What I wish was different

The scheduling wasn’t always in my favor but it was great experience

Advice

If you’re looking to gain a ton of knowledge just based on how an emergency department works and what a doctor/ PA/ nurse does on a regular basis this is a great job for you. I came back to school this semester knowing so much more about the field I would like to go into than I could have imagined before I started.

What I liked

The connections I was able to make with nurses and physicians.

What I wish was different

I wish I got paid more for all the work I did.

Advice

It’s a good place to get a foot in the door in the medical field. You can get great recommendation letters. Not a good forever job, though. Salary is okay but you do a lot and don’t get paid much. Sometimes had to work through lunch breaks depending on if the doctor is on time or running behind (which happens a lot in pediatrics).
