Medical Scribe

May 2018 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I loved the medical exposure and experience working in the field. Working with doctors allowed me to learn and grow as a pre-medical student.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more opportunities to sit down between patient visits, or seats available for the scribes to sit.

Advice

The job is very fast paced so it is important to brush up on typing skills and medical terminology before each shift.

What I liked

Great for pre-med students

What I wish was different

Took 2 months to start working after being hired, wish the process had been better organized and moved more quickly

Advice

Be patient with ScribeAmerica, the company does not seem very organized and I have had some problems with follow-through from managers. Can be frustrating but once you start working for doctors it is worth it

What I liked

As a scribe I am able to see the doctors complete process from the initial examination to his diagnosis and treatment. It’s the best pre-medical experience.

What I wish was different

It may have been benifical to scribe for more than one doctor during the summer when I had time.

Advice

If your looking for clinical experience for medical school this is one of your best options.

It’s been a great experience so far. I learned a lot about some of the chronic diseases that are plaguing society today such as anxiety and depression, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Scribing has given me the opportunity to get patient care hours and explore medicine in a more intimate way.

Be prepared to learn and learn some more.

Medical Scribe

July 2019 • Riverhead, NY

What I liked

I applied for this job because I would like to go to medical school and thought this would be great experience. I am still doing the job while in school, as it requires a minimum of a year commitment. I absolutely love the doctor that I was paired to scribe with. He is a cardiologist located in Riverhead, NY and he has been nothing but kind to me. He teaches me a lot and continues to encourage me to pursue my career in medicine.

What I wish was different

Although the doctor that I work with is great, he is not the actual "company" I work for. I was hired by, and am still paid by, ScribeAmerica. From the moment I was hired, ScribeAmerica has been nothing but confusing. Their organization is honestly lacking. I wasn't told about a mandatory orientation in the city until a few days prior. I wasn't told about needing to complete an online training prior to a certain deadline. I wasn't told what the uniform was. I wasn't told I had to travel to western Long island to pick up an ID card. Those are just a few examples; however, their lack of organization was so bad that I reconsidered taking the job. If it weren't for me wanting the experience and enjoying the doctor I scribe for, I might've. But other than their lack of organization, the job has been fine.

Advice

Be passionate about medical school. This job requires a minimum of 1 yer commitment, so be sure that this is something you want to do. And if, during the job, you realize that medicine isn't for you - then that's okay. This job doesn't mean you hAVE to go to medical school, obviously. But if you're serious about medical school, I think scribing is a great way to learn and start to see what it is like from one point of view.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Know that it takes time to get used to being a scribe; you won't know everything from the start because you're not a healthcare professional. If you work hard to improve and learn from your mistakes, the provider(s) will be much more pleased and impressed, and you will feel more rewarded from the improvements.

Medical Scribe

January 2019 • Winter Haven, FL

What I liked

The experience of working alongside actual doctors and seeing how they work with real patients.

What I wish was different

The training done over the computer rather than in person was not that useful and took a long time, although I contribute this to being hired during the merger between ScribeAmerica and PhysAssist.

Advice

Believe in yourself! It's overwhelming at first but you will learn and be amazing if you put in the effort.

Medical Scribe

May - September 2019 • Wyoming, PA

What I liked

Being a student pursuing a job in the medical field this is an excellent way to get exposure and experience in the Emergency Department. What I liked most about this job is the access you have to references. You are constantly surrounded by interesting medical cases as well as a Doctor that can answer any questions you have for them.

What I wish was different

This job requires you to have a 90-day probation period where they determine if you are capable of working this job. During this probation period you are only making $8/hour which is not enough for the amount of work you have to do.

Advice

Through working this job I learned that first hand experience is the best way you can learn more. I find that the topics I have to study for class are easier to grasp because of my background knowledge I learned this summer.

Medical Scribe

May - August 2018 • Bay Shore, NY

What I liked

I pan on attending graduate school and becoming a physician's assistant in the near future, so an opportunity to work as a medical scribe in an emergency room amongst trained medical professionals like medical doctors, nurse practitioners and physician's assistants, the experience simply cannot be matched. I really enjoyed being side-by-side with these professionals, not only learning directly from them via word of mouth but also from patient's from all walks of life. On the slower days, I would talk to medical professionals, ask questions and get the inside scoop on the inner-workings of emergency rooms, medical school and graduate school. I have greatly expanded my medicinal knowledge and have far surpassed some of the experience of my peers, setting me apart for future graduate school applications. I am truly blessed to have been chosen for this experience and look forward to continuing my position as a medical scribe after I finish my undergraduate here at Brockport.

What I wish was different

I wish there was improved technology for scribes in the hospital I was working at because the computers we used to take the doctor's notes were constantly dying, despite being fully charged and would sometimes lose connection. Oftentimes when I lost connection to the server/Wifi, I would lose the chart I was on and would have to redo the entire chart and ask the doctor all the information again because I had lost the notes I took.

Advice

Some advice I have regarding this experience would be to act confident, ask questions and be quick on your feet. The last thing a doctor or medical professional wants to see is lack of confidence in a scribe because now they are worried you will mess up their charts. Regarding the second piece of advice, asking questions is probably the most important. Oftentimes as scribes we don't get all the information in the room when the doctor is assessing the patient and so if we do not hear something that is said, it is important that we ask the doctor or medical professional so that no mistakes are made on the chart.

Medical Scribe

June 2018 • King of Prussia, PA

What I liked

I really have enjoyed the experience that I am getting from working in the CHOP Urgent Care. I am able to see what is like to be a doctor and get exposure to interesting things. Also, the training for this job was extensive but I really enjoyed it because I now know much more about the medical field things related to medicine and health.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to work more of the summer. I had a lot of time over the summer, but since it is at an Urgent Care, the shifts were only 4:00 pm- 10:00 pm on weekdays and 6-7 hour shifts on the weekends.

Advice

I would recommend that if you are interested in doing this, apply early and get going on the training process early. The testing/training process takes some time so start early so you can get started working sooner!
