Emergency Department Medical Scribe

July 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I love my job. Working in the emergency department puts life into perspective. It showed me how fast you’re life can change, in an instant. Watching the physicians and staff put their hearts into people they don’t know, to make sure they’re okay is an incredible experience. It inspired me to want to become a physicians assistant, and experience this again hands on. I want this to be my life and passion.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more prepared for some of the medical cases that I witnessed. Some people’s lives were taken tragically.

Advice

The advice that I would give someone who wants to be a medical scribe, is that even though it’s a job, it’s also a whole new life experience. Take it all in, don’t be afraid of the chaos. The chaos is was makes this experience so different from anything else for me.

Medical Scribe

May 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I received thorough training to understand the basics of cardiology, as well as training with the EMR program, NextGen. I have been learning so much about cardiology and have developed my understanding of medical decision making by speaking with doctors and preparing patient’s medical charts for the physicians I’m working with.

What I wish was different

More in-depth training for complex cases and diseases, prior to starting work independently.

Advice

Take the time to really ask questions about the cardiology content during classroom training; your knowledge of cardiology and common testing and diagnoses is crucial!

Medical Scribe

May 2018 • Parma, OH

What I liked

Creating connections with physicians and learning the EMR system.

What I wish was different

It was extremely low pay for the amount of work.

Advice

Absolutely be a scribe, but learn when you’ve learned enough. Know the threshold of when your learning potential matches the cost of working the job. After the threshold is met, there is less to learn as there is more to do and sacrifice. At that point, search for the next opportunity (research, pharm tech, private scribing, etc. $$)
