Citizen Science Manager

SUMMARY: Implements programs in support of the mission, focused primarily on expanding and maintaining citizen science programming. Manages databases for Citizen Science projects, including bathymetric and geospatial data. Works with all members of the SeaKeepers team to ensure that program content is disseminated across all platforms, including social media and throughout the yachting community. 

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Program Development and Enhancement

  • Supports Chief Programs Officer in developing and implementing citizen science projects and initiatives.
  • Manages the development of citizen science programming by maintaining ongoing studies and initiatives and exploring new opportunities for yachts at sea to collect data.
  • Processes data received from vessel participants e.g. creating depth maps from data submitted for the Seabed 2030 project.
  • Manages communications between citizen scientists and research leads, shares data and summarizes research results on an annual basis or as needed.
  • Maintains relationships with participating yachts and vessels.
  • Engages the yachting community through presentations and outreach events in order to involve more yachts in citizen science.
  • Collaborate with SeaKeepers’ programming team as well as its international chapters to expand our scientific efforts, meet with prospective organizations, and develop unique and useful tools for scientific partners.
  • Assists with Scientist-led expeditions, Community Engagement, and Educational Outreach efforts if needed.

 

Current Affairs 

  • Researches, drafts and provides pertinent scientific insight concerning SeaKeepers’ position on current environmental issues.
  • Promotes SeaKeepers’ programs and policies by attending scientific conferences, boat shows, and networking events as necessary.

 

MINIMUM JOB/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Master of Science, preferably in marine biology, biology, or related field, OR Bachelor of Science in marine biology or related field AND minimum of two years professional experience in relevant field. Experience with yachting community is a bonus. 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • General understanding of marine topics including biological and physical oceanography
  • Ability to understand and perform analyses on data
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in GIS systems and software is a must, especially Python Coding. 
  • Scientific writing and science communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational and schedule management skills
  • Ability to exercise utmost confidentiality.
  • Excellent English grammatical and spelling skills
  • Excellent skills in preparing business correspondence.
  • Excellent organizational and clerical skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Proficiency in office machines and office software including MSOffice (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) relational database and internet navigation software.
  • Ability to SCUBA dive (certification can be acquired after hire) and comfort in and around boats and yachts
