Grants manager

Miami Waterkeeper (MWK) is an award-winning non-profit organization dedicated to protecting Biscayne Bay and the surrounding watershed. Launched in 2010, MWK has become a leading advocate for clean water, inspiring a movement of empowered citizens dedicated to achieving swimmable, drinkable, fishable water. The Grants Manager plays a pivotal role in the success of Miami Waterkeeper by leading the organization's efforts to secure grant funding to support its environmental conservation and sustainability initiatives. This position is part of a grants team that is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive grants strategy; identifying potential funding opportunities from private foundations, corporations, and government; cultivating relationships with funders; and managing and executing on the grant application and reporting process. The Grants Manager works closely with the executive team, program managers, and finance department to ensure the financial sustainability of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Grant Proposal and Report Development (50%)

Prepare, write, and edit grant proposals and reports, including narratives, budgets and expenses, and supporting documents.

Work closely with the finance department to develop accurate project budgets for grant applications.

Ensure all grant applications and reports are submitted in a timely manner and comply with the requirements of each funding source.

Maintain records of grant submissions, awards, reporting deadlines, and report submissions.

Compliance and Management (30%)

Oversee the administration of grants, including tracking deliverables and milestones.

Monitor programmatic deliverables and ensure outputs are completed within required award terms.

Ensure compliance with all grant agreements and reporting requirements.

Monitor and track grant expenditures to ensure compliance with grant terms and reporting requirements.

Research and Qualification (10%)

  • Identify funding priorities, potential grant sources, and opportunities for diversifying funding streams across government agencies, foundations, corporations, and other sources.
  • Monitor grant announcements and trends in the environmental sector.

Relationship Building (10%)

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential funders.
  • Ensure alignment between funding opportunities and program needs through communication with foundation program managers and MWK program managers, as needed. 
  • Represent the organization to donors and funding agencies.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a grants strategy aligned with the organization's mission and objectives.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including program management, finance, and communications, to support grant-funded initiatives.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff involved in grant-related activities.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., environmental science, nonprofit management, communications) or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in grant writing and successful grant acquisition in the nonprofit sector, preferably in environmental or conservation organizations.
  • Strong understanding of environmental issues and sustainability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional research, analytical, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in grant management software, project management software,  Google Suite, and Dropbox.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting principles and budgeting.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet multiple simultaneous deadlines and work under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience working with government agencies and private foundations.
