Summer Internship
The goal for the internship is to inspire and empower passionate individuals to create an environment for people who are dedicated to learning creative solutions to make the world a more sustainable place through growing nutrient dense food locally.
A Unique Opportunity:
Bare Roots Organics farm located in Jupiter Florida is seeking two individuals interested in gaining experience and skills related to a commercial size aquaponic farm. Interns will learn about farm management, basic plant knowledge, fish farming, health, nutrition, and aquaponic farming methods. Upon completion of this internship, individuals will have the skills to fully manage the farm.
This is a great opportunity to explore, learn, and get hands-on experience in urban agriculture.
Compensation:
Although this is an unpaid educational opportunity, the knowledge that will be acquired along with hands-on experience learned, is invaluable.
Learning Objectives:
- Full participation in what happens on a commercial-scale urban farm throughout the summer season including seeding, transplanting from nursery to deep water, harvesting and packaging produce for various markets, as well as general farm/greenhouse maintenance.
- Weekly assignments could include water quality/chemistry evaluation, pest management (IPM) research and crop planning.
- Begin familiarity with different farm distribution by participating at the Farmers Market, donations, deliveries to restaurants and retail outlets.
- Assist with troubleshooting, repair and problem solving
- General Administrative, Marketing and Social Media
- Other duties as assigned
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Independent interest in learning specifically about sustainable urban agriculture and its methods of food production
- Ability to work independently, self-starter, along with being a team player
- Willingness to take initiative and follow-through on tasks and assignments
- Ability to physically work within a variety of conditions (i.e., endurance to work long days, summer heat, standing for a period of time, etc.)
- Punctuality and dependability
- Ability to take direction well with a strong attentiveness to detail
- Reliable transportation
- Occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds, 20 pounds being normal.
Time Commitment: Approximately 21 hours per week, three-7 hour days
Required: Harvest Days - two times per week
