Educator Internship - Summer 2022: Marine Environmental Education Center at the Carpenter House (MEEC)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:  

To participate in the development and expansion of educational programming through the Marine Environmental Education Center at the Carpenter House under the direction of the Director of Carpenter House MEEC Program, Marine Turtle Caretaker/Permit Holder, MEEC Sea Turtle Education Specialist.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1.    Perform the following duties that include, but are not limited to:
a.    Work on and contribute to collaborative education/outreach teams
b.    Perform outreach activities and integrate scientific knowledge and operational expertise to ensure excellence in development and translation of research/outreach
c.    Communicate with local teachers and schools
d.    Assist in the planning and scheduling of school field trips
e.    Host center tours for general public and school groups
f.     Classroom management and implementation of new programs
g.    Assist in organizing supplies and activities for programs
h.    Help schedule educational workshops at the MEEC
i.     Assist in daily operations of Carpenter House MEEC facility

2.    Work with general public to educate kids and adults about sea turtles and other marine species

3.    Other duties as assigned

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1.    Event planning
2.    Answering phones and answering questions
3.    Assist in the collaboration with NSU Halmos College of Arts and Sciencesand Broward County Parks and Recreation

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1.    Knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; database and data entry skills
2.    Ability to utilize or learn to utilize software relevant to the research programs, new research methods, and work routines quickly
3.    Reading and comprehending reports and other scientific literature
4.    Friendly, outgoing personality,

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to lift at least 50lbs
Ability to stand for long periods of time in inclement weather (heat, rain, etc) during programming/tours
Reliable transportation preferred

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES:
Must pass criminal background check

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
High school Diploma
Must be current undergraduate student

MAJOR:
Education, Marine Biology preferred

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Minimum GPA: 3.3
Strong desire to learn about the marine sciences

OTHER PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Good communication skills
Well organized with attention to detail
