Internship - ACE EPIC USFWS WA: ONE Visitor Services – Leavenworth Fisheries Complex

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking ONE Visitor Services Intern to assist in support of refuge visitor services programs at the Leavenworth Fisheries Complex.  
Intern shall assist with providing high quality visitor services to visitors to the site throughout the term, as well as education, coordination, and volunteer recruitment for the Visitor Services program and for the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival. Every aspect of our outreach efforts relies heavily on volunteerism. This position shall be an essential part of volunteer recruitment and record keeping. The person in the position shall also have the option of assisting with field biology projects and with fish production. The diversity of experience offered in this position allows the intern to explore which avenue they are best suited to pursue: biology, fish production, environmental education, media outreach, public education, etc.

The Visitor Services program for the LFC is a critical connection between the Service and the public. LNFH is the most-visited national fish hatchery in the nation, with 100,000 visitors annually.

Compensation: The ACE interns will receive a living allowance of $400 week for food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly. 
PLC Competitive Hiring Authority: This position is authorized by the Public Land Corps (PLC) Act of 1993 and expanded by the Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2013. Interns who meet basic requirements during their term of service may be eligible to receive their Noncompetitive Hiring Eligibility Certificate to be used when applying to future federal jobs. Requirements are: (1) Intern must be between the ages of 18 to 30 and (2) Intern must complete at least 640 hours on a federally approved PLC Project. More information can be provided upon request.
AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 900-hour AmeriCorps Education Award of ($2,960) upon successful completion of internship hours. Additional enrollment is required.
Position Description: 
Duties for this position will include:
Environmental Education / Interpretation 
  • Develop and conduct research for educational programs and products including a program outline and resource materials, pamphlets and brochures. Lessons and programs will integrate creativity and interpretive techniques for communicating refuge management messages 
  • Greet and orient visitors to the site with a friendly attitude of service
  • Assist in preparing for, conducting, and clean up after the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival, including (but not limited to) volunteer recruitment, assembly of materials and equipment, leading activities, etc.
  • Work closely with a Partner group, Friends of Northwest Hatcheries, as well as with other partners, to prepare for and deliver high quality outreach and educational programs
 
Habitat Restoration
  • Participate in habitat management and monitoring when possible, through the Mid-Columbia Fish & Wildlife Conservation Office
  • Assist in maintaining the on-site pollinator garden at Leavenworth NFH
  • Recruit and lead volunteers on project to improve habitat at the hatcheries 
Volunteer Program: 
  • Recruit and work with volunteers on a variety of projects
  • Work closely with hatchery hosts to greet and orient visitors and accomplish other tasks
