Engineering Equipment Operator

Duties

Summary

This position is a ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR, WG- 5716-9 working in New Johnsonville, TN for the R4-Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge.

Responsibilities

As a ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
  • Keep written maintenance records for all equipment operated. Keep equipment logbooks up-to-date at all time. Input equipment service and maintenance data in Service Asset Maintenance Management System (SAMMS).
  • Operate a variety of gasoline/diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler-type traction and attachments. Generally performed on flat, rolling, and some irregular terrain where course to medium grades are required.
  • Operate crawler tractor in forested terrain in piling of slash, clearing brush, small trees, tree stumps, rocks, and developing fire lanes.
  • Operate front-end loader or other attachments to remove piles of dirt/rock/debris, to load trucks or for the digging of earth or gravel.
  • Operate bulldozer, excavator, or other attachments to push/place refuse into an open pit or to fill in demolished building sites and cover with earth, to clean ditches, to repair holes in dikes, to excavate ditches and ponds.
  • Operate farm tractors with auxiliary equipment for farming, mowing, maintaining dikes, and other related activities.
  • Perform tasks involved with biological census work, building maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties not requiring any special skill, training, or experience.
  • Conduct disking, chopping, mowing, rotovating, digging, loading and leveling to a medium and/or finish grade for the purpose of shaping of roads and parking lots and setting culverts where levels are essential to accommodate rain runoff.
  • Service, check, and fuel equipment/attachments before operation. Perform daily preventative maintenance and make repairs/adjustments to equipment and attachments, including replacing chains/belts, cables, lubrication, oil/filter replacement, etc.
  • Service equipment by: checking fluids, lubricating, and perform safety checks; perform regular scheduled service that includes changing fluids/filters, and replacing components that require dismantling of the equipment.

ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR WITHOUT MORE THAN
NORMAL SUPERVISION:
A WG-09 is expected to: 1) operate a crawler tractor, excavator, or motor grader to excavate, backfill, grade, or level
earth to rough specifications; 2) move earth on steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, rocky or low lying soft/wet
ground, hilly forests, and other surfaces with similar features; 3) on flat or rolling terrain, operates crawler tractor or motor
grader in grading surfaces, compacting soils, and/or spreading surfacing materials; 4) operate equipment close to
buildings, towers, trees, drop-offs, waterlines, etc.; 5) perform operator/preventative maintenance all equipment.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements.
