Engineer I - Comm Systems

Ship Control and Monitoring Systems Engineering (Department 448) develops in-house electronic systems and integrates vendor/government supplied equipment to support the VA Ship Control System (SCS), VA/OR Monitoring Systems, and the VA/OR Portable Ship Control Systems (PSCS)/Bridge Indication and Control System (BICS). Opportunities exist within the following department teams:

Ship Control Engineering -
This innovative team performs system and hardware engineering tasks for the VIRGINIA Ship Control System (SCS) and Portable Ship Control System (PSCS). We take products from the concept phase, through requirements definition, prototyping and full-scale development, qualification, deployment, and support in the field.  The job entails designing highly reliable, fault tolerant control systems that must perform in a challenging environment, including combat. Knowledge of computer system architectures, hardware/software integration, digital and analog instrumentation, and networking are desirable. The group also participates in production, dockside and post-delivery testing of the PSCS. Communication and writing skills are critical attributes of any prospective candidate. Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office products and the systems engineering processes are highly desirable. The selected candidate must be able to work in a team environment and support emergent work, including overtime and travel, as needed.

Fly-By-Wire & Quality Group  -
This team assists engineering, design and shipbuilder in implementing FBW requirements during all phases of system development, production, installation and test. Team members perform reviews and assessments of products and processes for compliance. The group also works with stakeholder departments to ensure that compliant processes are in place to support fabrication and construction of the production FBW SCS shipsets. Additional responsibilities include:
  • Training Quality Assurance Auditors in conducting FBW Audits and Assessments.
  • Taking a lead role in supporting/coordinating NAVSEA, SUPSHIP and internal Fly-By-Wire audits.
  • Reporting independently to the Quality Department FBW representative.
  • Maintaining SFCC test beds and developing the SFCC certification test procedures.
  • Providing FBW engineering support for certification of the Ship Control System for Unrestricted
VA Ship Control Production & In-Service Engineering -
This high-performing team fulfills engineering tasks related to initial hardware production, shipboard installation, test, delivery, and at-sea testing of Ship Control components. For delivered submarines, the group provides fleet support to resolve operational problems.  Resolutions of construction problems include detailed review of construction drawings, correcting design/drawings errors to resolving installation problems encountered by the trades. Resolution of operational problems includes deck-plate troubleshooting, writing technical procedures, and verbal guidance.  Other tasks include reviewing, maintaining, and updating technical documents, supporting auditors in the certification of boats prior to key events, and participating in production, dockside and post-delivery testing. Effective communication skills are required to interface with EB Management, Construction Engineering, Test Organizations, Trades, Ship's Management, NAVY customer, and Fleet.  The selected candidate must be able to work in a team environment and support emergent work, as needed. Occasional overtime and travel to Electric Boat facilities in Groton and Quonset Point, Newport News Shipbuilding and US Naval facilities is required.

Ship Control Operator Trainers
The D448 Trainer group installs, upgrades, and maintains full motion Ship Control Operator Trainers (SCOTs) and Ship Control Maintenance Trainers for Los Angeles, Seawolf, Ohio and Virginia submarine classes. The trainers are used to certify pilots for each of these different classes in operation and maintenance of the ship control station. The trainers group consists of software and hardware engineers that design, modify and test complex mechatronic systems.

Total Ship Monitoring Systems Engineering
The Total Ship Monitoring team is responsible for the development, qualification, integration, testing and support of contractor furnished and government furnished sensor systems on new construction and delivered submarines.
This position will require that the engineer perform circuit card design and FPGA firmware development tasks. The candidate will also be required to perform technology investigations, trade-studies, identify and resolve risks, identify opportunities for cost reductions for Total Ship Monitoring System (TSMS) products. The candidate will also be required to interface with NAVSEA, vendors and other EB Departments. Successful applicants will be required to assist in the system engineering efforts ranging from initial requirements definition, system design through development, hardware/software integration, component qualification, test, construction support, delivery and post-delivery support to include analysis and resolution of fleet identified problems, assessment of obsolescence issues, and identification of components for technical refresh.
