The Northwest Straits Commission (NWSC) -- a governmental organization housed in the Department of Ecology's SEA program was established to protect and restore the unique, rich marine ecosystem of the Northwest Straits region of Puget Sound through a local-based approach--is looking to fill the Northwest Straits Commission Ecosystem Project Coordinator (Environmental Specialist 2) position. This is a full-time project position based at the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve near Mount Vernon, WA.  The Commission's website is found at www.nwstraits.org, and our social media handle is @nwstraits.

The Northwest Straits Commission provides resources, coordination and technical support to seven county-based Marine Resource Committees (MRCs) and carries out marine conservation projects throughout the Northwest Straits region.
 
We are looking for applicants who have strong communication skills both written and verbal, possess the ability to thrive working independently and as a member of a small, highly-collaborative team, are familiar with conducting scientific studies, surveys and data analysis, have excellent time and task management skills, and possess a sense of humor and excellent diplomacy skills.

Duties
Agency Mission: Ecology's mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington's environment and to promote the wise management of our air, land and water for the benefit of current and future generations.  

Program Mission: The Shorelands and Environmental Assistance (SEA) Program's mission is to support community conservation efforts for our shorelands, wetlands, and floodplains.

The Northwest Straits Commission Ecosystem Project Coordinator position works under the general direction of the Marine Program Manager and in close collaboration with the Operations Manager to provide professional research support to the NW Straits Commission. The position oversees monitoring projects, equipment coordination, data processing and analysis, database population, and development of data reporting tools (such as GIS based Story Maps), while working closely with community based Marine Resources Committees and partners . The position will also work closely with the Marine Program Manager and Science Advisory Committee to improve our ability to articulate quantitative or semi-quantitative contributions of NW Straits Commission projects to ecosystem recovery.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
 
A Bachelor's degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field and one (1) year of professional level experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning.

OR

A Master's degree in one of the above fields.

OR

One (1) year of experience as an Environmental Specialist 1, at the Department of Ecology.

OR

Additional qualifying experience will substitute, year for year, for education.
 

Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in the area of Marine Ecology/ fisheries Science, or other Natural Resources Science.
  • Experience in the area of quantitative science.
  • One (1) year experience working with volunteers.
  • Knowledge and understanding of qualitative and/or quantitative analysis as applied to marine populations, ecosystems or social science.
  • Functional knowledge of GIS.
  • Knowledge of user interface development in Microsoft Access.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and programs while interfacing with a variety of partners.
  • Knowledge of NW Straits and/or Puget Sound marine and nearshore conservation issues.
  • Knowledge of the Northwest Straits Initiative.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of interests including but not limited to ports, elected officials, businesses, environmental groups and Tribes. 
  
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
 
Must have a valid driver's license.
