Student Trainee (Energy Industry)

Positions are located in the Office of Enforcement - Division of Analytics and Surveillance (DAS). DAS focuses on identifying potential manipulation, anti-competitive behavior, and other anomalous activities in the natural gas and electricity markets. To accomplish this goal, DAS analysts either possess or develop through DAS’ rigorous training program, the ability to write code to screen FERC’s large set of non-public trading and market data. Additionally, analysts develop the skills to analyze energy trading strategies and detect potential manipulation, anti-competitive behavior, and other anomalies in the energy markets. The analysts and economists in DAS participate in investigations and docketed proceedings, providing detailed transactional analysis, market event analysis, and subject matter expertise.
Student interns participate in a DAS-led mini boot camp which introduces interns to FERC, legal and regulatory aspects of market monitoring, natural gas and electricity market concepts, basic commodity trading concepts, and basic SAS coding. Each intern works with a mentor to complete a project involving coding and research into a specific aspect of energy market design. At the end of the internship, the intern will make a presentation on his/her project to the division.
At time of application, applicant must submit proof of current enrollment in a degree-seeking program. If selected, applicant must provide proof of continuing education through either the Summer or Fall 2019 semesters. To meet the definition of a student, applicants must be enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program. 

These positions are temporary, they may be converted to a full time, career-conditional position. Any conversions to full time or career-conditional status is neither implied nor guaranteed.
Major Duties of the position:
- Analyze large volumes of data using SAS, Python or R.
- Assist in the analysis of electric and gas markets, assessing complex issues of market structure, conduct and performance.
- Work independently to summarize findings and visually present data.
