TRANSPORTATION INTERN
Salary Range: $9.30 - $15.00/hour
(Dependent on level of education)

DEFINITION:
The City of Fort Lauderdale Transportation and Mobility Department is searching for an individual interested in gaining knowledge and experience in transportation planning and practices. This is varied work of average difficulty designed to provide supervised practical work experience for persons preparing themselves for professional and managerial careers in program administration and cross-agency coordination. 

Employees in this class perform various assigned duties which may include analyzing maintenance of traffic plans, conducting research, interacting with the public to answer questions and provide information, developing graphics and visuals, or written reports. Emphasis is placed on providing varied, meaningful learning experiences to the employee, while at the same time providing productive work to the City. The intern will work on tangible projects and learn basic transportation planning concepts and skills.

This work requires technical proficiency in personal computers and Microsoft Office products. Preference is given to students with knowledge of project management software such as Clarizen or SmartSheet.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
  • Answers phone calls and emails from the public.
  • Updates LauderStreet (the City’s road closures map) with approved right of way closures in the City.
  • Assists project team members with various support tasks.
  • Conducts basic research, data collection, and analysis in the office on transportation related topics.
  • Compiles data, prepares basic plans, best practices, studies, etc.
  • Assists in the development of presentation materials and reports.
  • Organizes project background information for use in reports and production of presentation graphics.
  • Performs related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Currently seeking or successfully graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in communication, construction, urban and regional, transportation, or environmental planning, architecture, civil engineering or other related field.

2. Able to contribute a minimum of 25 hours a week to ensure project continuity.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and produce work with minimal supervision, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and principles employed in report writing, and the preparation of visual aids, charts and graphs.
  • Knowledge of computers and operating systems.
  • Basic knowledge of roadway design and Sustainability Principles
  • Knowledge of the objectives, principles and techniques of transportation planning.
  • Ability to conduct statistical analysis using spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, statistical analyses, charts and graphs.
  • Ability to present reports and recommendations concisely and effectively in oral and written form
