National Security and International Policy Internship, China Specialist and Generalist

The National Security and International Policy (NSIP) team seeks to advance a strong progressive vision for U.S. foreign policy. The team works on a wide array of issues—ranging from defense and national security policy, to foreign affairs and international development—and has a broad geographic scope, from China and the Koreas, to the Middle East and Turkey, to Mexico and the Americas. Major ongoing projects include innovative work on U.S. foreign policy toward China and in Asia; development of a strong progressive vision on national defense; and generating ideas to prevent democratic backslide and the rise of authoritarianism.

Interns working with American Progress’ NSIP team will have the opportunity to perform research and make substantive contributions to the team’s mission and ongoing projects in progressive national security, foreign affairs, and global development. Interns will develop the skills and experience needed to contribute effectively as a policy professional to the national security and foreign policy conversation.

Candidates must possess excellent oral and written communications skills and knowledge of basic research methods. Successful candidates will have an interest in helping to promote progressive national security and foreign policy and have familiarity with the team’s recent work.

Typical responsibilities for NSIP interns include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct research on topical national security issues.
  • Draft, edit, and contribute research to memos, columns, event summaries, and reports.
  • Provide administrative support for events and large meetings.
  • Attend and report on policy meetings, seminars, hearings, and lectures.

This spring, the NSIP team is looking for two interns: one to provide support for the China subteam and one to provide general team support. Please indicate which position you are applying for in your cover letter.

The China subteam is looking for an intern with:
  • A demonstrated interest in geopolitical issues in Asia.
  • High-level Mandarin Chinese proficiency. In your cover letter, please indicate your level of Chinese proficiency and elaborate on experience conducting research using Chinese-language sources.
The general support intern should have:
  • A demonstrated interest in national security issues.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • A willingness to dive into both substantive and operational issues.

American Progress interns are paid at the D.C. minimum wage rate. As of July 2019, that rate is $14 per hour. Effective July 1, 2020, the D.C. minimum wage will rise to $15 per hour. American Progress also offers interns metro benefits.
