Spring 2019 Internship - Urban and Regional Policy Program

Title: Spring 2019 Urban and Regional Policy Intern
Reports To: Program Coordinator, Urban and Regional Policy

Job Summary:

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) Urban and Regional Policy program (URP) is currently seeking an intern for spring 2019. URP engages leading U.S. and European policymakers and practitioners by facilitating the exchange of transatlantic solutions for building sustainable, inclusive, and globally-competitive cities. URP works in selected cities in the United States and Europe that share a set of common challenges and desire to explore solutions through transatlantic exchange. URP actively stewards transatlantic initiatives that explore key issues through high-impact gatherings, peer exchanges, and applied research. The Urban program focuses its work on two inter-related themes that are critical to a transatlantic urban agenda:
• Sustainable & Livable Cities (SLC) – exploring the development of sites and systems that promote urban sustainability and livability while stimulating local and regional economies;
• Innovative & Inclusive Cities (IIC) – supporting the development of policies and programs that drive towards inclusive prosperity and globally competitiveness.

The Urban and Regional Policy internship is unpaid but offers an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional experience for those interested in a career in urban policy or transatlantic city affairs. 

The Urban and Regional Policy program conducts programs in the following topic areas. Interns will be responsible for helping to operationalize, plan, and conduct research in collaboration with the URP team on:
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Energy Transition
  • Civic Engagement
  • Inclusive Economic Development
  • Climate
  • Integrated Urban Development
  • Mobility

Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Supporting program staff in the implementation of ongoing programming and administrative needs.
  • Facilitating research on best practices in urban and regional policy in communities on both sides of the Atlantic;
  • Writing and editing materials for the URP team in support of our ongoing programs.
  • Tracking and monitoring project status and tasks to be completed;
  • Updating the database of URP contacts; and
  • Assisting in the planning and implementation of small- and large-scale events and meetings

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Knowledge of and/or strong interest in urban/regional policy topics and themes
  • Strong computer skills and comfortable using Microsoft Excel.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Capable of working on multiple projects at once and prioritizing tasks.
  • Excellent analytical and written skills and previous research experience.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Creativity, motivation, and responsibility to independently complete writing and research projects.

Start and Length of Internship:
  • Preferred starting date: January 9, 2019 or January 16, 2019
  •  Preferred time commitment: At least 25-35 hours per week, Monday–Friday between 9 AM to 5 PM.
