Pre-Loader

June 2020 • Middleton, WI

What I liked

It's a fast paced job that always keeps you moving and on your feet. While the hours vary weekly, you know you only work 5 scheduled days a week (Tues-Sat), can choose to work in the morning or evening shift when being hired, and as a part timer, for every hour over five hours you make time and a half. This meant that during peak season I was able to earn about an extra $100 a day because you would work a full 8 hours.

What I wish was different

It can be strenuous on the body and you do have to realize that sleep is important, but because of the hours and varying start times you may find you have to miss out on fun events to ensure you are comfortable at work. Drinking lots of water is also super important, so they do encourage avoiding caffeine!

Advice

If you would like to be paid to work out, this is definitely an experience I would recommend! Moreover, for college students, if you work for UPS (there is also a Rockford location) you can get up to $5,200 annually in student aid from UPS by applying.

What I wish was different

The work was not incredibly meaningful. The internship was virtual due to Covid, so this could have been a factor.

Advice

This internship is what you make of it. Seek work, and ask questions. People are willing to listen and help at this company

What I wish was different

I wish I would have known what I was getting into before I accepted the position. The job description was very vague and I ended up working on something I wasn't familiar with.

Corporate Planning Intern

May - August 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I enjoyed the learning experience. I had the opportunity to learn a new program called Power BI that I used to create visual models for financial history and goals. It was a form of data analysis, which is becoming very popular and will be great for my future career goals.

What I wish was different

I didn't enjoy the team I worked with. I only met with my team maybe once every two or three days. The lack of communication made it hard to enjoy the experience. Upper-level management was not very involved either in the intern's work. I also felt like they were not very involved with their interns, and the salary was cut short.

Advice

I would advise students to join an income-generating role. I feel like internal workers have more politics in the workforce and are not cared for as much.

F & A Intern

May - July 2019 • Coppell, TX

What I liked

The team was excellent! I was welcomed to the staff immediately. The team (Fixed Assets) also had an “open desk” policy, where you could ask anyone a question and anyone who could would help. Loved the teambuilding, the experience and the network I formed. Some of my daily/weekly duties were the same, but each day brought different challenged that helped shape me!

What I wish was different

I wish the other interns and I could have swapped places for a day or so, just to see what other teams were responsible for! I also wish there would have been overtime for the interns, if only for a few hours. Company policy had us unable to work any overtime, but we could have been more helpful had we been allowed to!

Advice

Learning how to communicate effectively is a big deal! Like my job at UPS, many companies require a lot of joint effort between teams all over the country (or in my case, the world). Understanding that communication has to be fast, efficient and respectful is such a powerful tool to have in your belt for any job!

Package Handler

August 2018 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I like the pay for the amount of work that needs to be done. I also enjoy the tuition reimbursement program that rewards me $5,250 per year. The environment and people that I work with are also friendly along with the great management that works there.

What I wish was different

I wish the hours would be different, I work 11pm-3am. I also wish that you would get paid based on how much volume you move rather than everyone getting paid the same hourly wage. Hourly wage is not bad, but production would increase if people were paid by volume moved rather than hourly wage.

Advice

This job is not for the physically weak, you need to be prepared to break a sweat for the first few weeks. A great place to work if you want to get in shape. I would also recommend being a hard worker as the management becomes a little more lenient when it comes to taking days off.

Jet Crew Cargo Handler

August 2017 • Albuquerque, NM

What I liked

I receive full time medical and dental benefits for my family and myself only working about 20 hours a week 4:15 a.m. to about 8:00 a.m

What I wish was different

More hours and or a chance to become promoted.

Advice

An absolutely great experience, the job has me walking about 4 miles 5 days a week, I see a beautiful sunrise every morning and I talk and converse with seasoned civilian and retired military pilots before launching out the aircraft each morning. This job is an excellent start to my daily studies and allows me to actually engage with safety, management, DOT regulations and real people driven by processes and standards. Not for non-early birds, but an excellent filler job as a military aviation crew member pursuing a technical management degree
